While attention often focuses on future fuels, the real immediate impact lies in operational discipline and voyage-level data. These are already shaping costs, emissions, and commercial performance today.

As Alex notes, the transition is not happening in a stable, long-term framework. It is being driven by near-term pressures such as EU and UK ETS regulation, fuel price volatility, and geopolitical uncertainty. In this environment, performance is determined voyage by voyage… not in some distant future scenario.

With stricter market-based measures expected from 2028, efficiency will move from a competitive advantage to a baseline requirement. The key question is no longer if the industry will decarbonise, but how effectively it manages the transition now.

The article argues that the most practical path forward is not waiting for a single dominant fuel, but focusing on incremental gains today, through better routing, closer monitoring, and stronger operational decision-making.
