IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez on Digitalisation and AI

With the Facilitation Committee (FAL) 50th session starting today, the IMO is poised to make headway on the digitalisation of maritime procedures, the integration of autonomous ships (MASS), and enhancing the security of port data. Delegates will be focused on:

Working towards a comprehensive Maritime Digitalisation Strategy for adoption by 2027, including standardising data formats to guide our digital transition.

Maritime Single Window (MSW) implementation: monitoring the mandatory electronic information exchange requirement (in effect since Jan 1, 2024) and updating guidelines for uniformity.

Autonomous ships (MASS) regulatory framework: developing the roadmap for a mandatory MASS Code (targeted for 2027–2028), addressing the role of remote operators and necessary amendments to the FAL Convention.

Data exchange and cybersecurity: essential work on guidelines for authenticating electronic certificates and ensuring the cybersecurity of data shared via Single Window systems.

In this exclusive video,  Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), shared some information about how the IMO is actively evolving its operational approach alongside the rapid development of digitalisation and artificial intelligence.

As he explains, digitalisation is a fundamental shift towards a more efficient, secure, and sustainable maritime sector. This work is critical to navigating the modern challenges and opportunities presented by rapid technological development.

Are there any other digital areas that you think the IMO needs to focus on?
