Maritime’s ‘dataholism’ problem

We recently published a poll on LinkedIn inviting the industry to vote on the most important factor when it comes to accelerating digitalisation, with leadership and cultural change coming top. Of all the interesting responses this generated, special credit has to go to Steven Jones, Founder of the Seafarers’ Happiness Index, who responded with an entire blog on his Substack, outlining the danger of the industry responding to the pressures of digitalisation by simply collecting as much data as possible.

His blog notes the importance of maritime businesses gaining a clear understanding of the challenges they are trying to solve, as well as where digital technologies can play a genuinely useful role, before gathering the most relevant data accordingly. That’s in line with our views – and indeed with those expressed by technology expert Grant Allen in his discussion with our CEO Namrata Nadkarni on different types of AI.

Embracing technology simply out of fear of being left behind will always be a flawed approach.  Instead, it’s crucial maritime is guided by a deep understanding of what new technology can deliver and how this meets their specific requirements.
