We are happy to see our client, Capt. Pradeep Chawla, CEO of MarinePALS, together with Capt. Vikrant S Gusain, CEO of Dockendale Ship Management Group, featured in Sandra Boga’s article ‘Gen Z, new fuels and a training gap: How old hands are turning to modern technology to upskill seafarers’ in TradeWinds.
Highlights from the article:
- As shipping moves closer to a decarbonised future, the pressure is on ship owners and managers to ensure that their crews are trained, upskilled and can safely operate vessels with low or zero-carbon future fuels and technologies.
- The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and International Maritime Organization (IMO) GHG targets are driving the move towards alternative fuels. With the increasing number of dual-fuel ships (LNG, methanol, ammonia, LPG) being built, there is an urgent need for relevant safety training. The core focus must be the safety of the ship and crew.
- The partnership between innovative digital training firm MarinePALS and Dockendale began in November 2023 with a pilot project in mid-2024 on 20 ships. The results were impressive, with a 30% improvement in PSC (Port State Control) performance of the fleet, and it was listed as a top performer in the RISK4SEA Top PSC Performers January 2025. The training is now being rolled out to another 20 ships, and by the end of the year, training will be rolled out to Dockendale’s entire fleet of 65 ships.
- Training prioritises the practical safety knowledge seafarers need for handling alternative fuels like LNG, rather than complex technical details.
- MarinePALS focuses on four pillars for training: micro-learning, gamification, virtual reality (VR) and simulations. MarinePALS is agile and can quickly create training content in response to incidents or new regulations (e.g., the Dali bridge incident in Baltimore and Port State Control campaigns).
- For Dockendale, high-quality training is part of their strategy, and they will launch their Mumbai training institute this month, and MarinePALS will be providing the digital training material.
