With digitalisation driving rapid change in the maritime and supply chain sectors, our CEO and founder Namrata Nadkarni moderated a panel at Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) for the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and WISTA Singapore exploring how everything from data analytics to AI has the power to deliver transformative change for the industry.
– Increased visibility and transparency expectations, including not just where cargo is but also the data and processes being used by various organisations. Online platforms are integral to this transformation and are being used across various stakeholder groups, including charterers, claims handlers and freight forwarders.
– AI is on the ascendancy when it comes to menial tasks, but is ultimately just a tool that requires human oversight.
– Although maritime is lagging behind some other sectors in terms of digital adoption, this means that there is massive opportunity for growth – with minimal risk since other sectors have been early adopters.
– Synchromodality is an emerging trend, with organisations choosing to harness real-time data to identify where they should switch between modes of transportation to avoid bottlenecks and also lower emissions. Not only could you reroute to a different port or warehouse, but you could also use this data to decide if you need to switch to rail if your port congestion is too bad.
The audience was then treated to a fascinating fireside chat between Amanda Hastings and Jennifer Barrow about what the data gathered by the Diversity Study Group (DSG) shows us about the APAC region.
In summary, the event was a great chance for Namrata to fulfil her journalistic desire to ask plenty of questions and offered great food for thought about our sector.
